Birnbeck Island

One of our landmark projects of 2024 took place on Birnbeck Island in the Bristol Channel.
Working in extreme November weather and challenging tidal conditions, our team travelled to the island by boat to carry out essential rescue works to a deteriorating boathouse that was at risk of collapsing into the sea.
A complex scaffold support system was commissioned by us and expertly designed and constructed by RJD Scaffolding to stabilise and prop the structure while works were undertaken.
Our operatives carefully removed all original clay roof tiles and set them aside for future reinstatement before constructing a completely new timber cut roof frame over the existing structure. Steel sheeting and flashings were then installed to provide robust protection against the harsh island environment, preserving the building’s original features and preventing further deterioration.
These works formed part of Somerset Council’s wider initiative to restore Birnbeck Island as a public attraction. In a future phase of the project, the boathouse will be fully restored to its original splendour. We are extremely proud to have been part of such a historically significant project.
